Preparing the Hearth

One of the first things you will want to do when cleaning hearth products is to place newspapers in the area surrounding the hearth. This will keep your floors from getting dirty while you clean. Next, you will want to clear your hearth of any soot and dirt. You can accomplish this with either a hand held brush and dust pan or a vacuum cleaner.

Homemade Cleaning Solution

If you do not want to go out and purchase a cleaning solution for your hearth, you can always make one yourself. By mixing three tablespoons of salt and one cup of detergent into 3 quarts of water, you will be sure to take out tough stains.

In this step, you will want to scrub the entirety of the hearth with a sponge and the cleaning solution you made. Let this solution sit for ten to fifteen minutes before returning with a plastic wire scrub. Once the solution has settled into the grime, you can begin to scrub it out with the brush.  Repeat this process until you are satisfied that the dirt has been removed from the walls. With a soft sponge and water, you will then want to clear the hearth of any remaining detergent left behind by the solution.
